The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is currently looking for volunteers for their Emergency Preparedness Division.

Applications are being accepted for Public Information/Outreach Volunteers and Emergency Preparedness Volunteers.

These are unpaid volunteer positions. 

Public Information/Outreach Volunteer

Job Description:

The Public Information Volunteer assists the EPD Operations staff with development of EPD website and social media tools, including, the Division’s Facebook and Twitter initiatives. The Public Information Volunteer will volunteer from 10 – 15 hours a week.


 Tasks Associated With Position:

  • Represent the EPD at Continuity Fairs, Presentations, workshops, etc to provide disaster preparedness education, awareness, and promote social media initiatives
  • Writes and updates Facebook and Twitter pages.  
  • Tasks assigned by Division Chief or Deputy Director
  • Participate in the design and updates EPD information for the Eye on the Storm or other publications.
  • Monitor Facebook, Twitter and JaxDisaster website during activations
  • Assists EPD Training and Exercise Coordinator with facilitating PIO initiatives for Division’s exercises.

 Position Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint;
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret data;
  • Proficiency in professional writing;
  • Familiarity with EPD Preparedness Programs
  • Trained on FEMA ICS 100, 200, NIMS/NRF;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; and
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Emergency Preparedness Volunteer

Job Description:

The Emergency Preparedness Volunteer assists in various areas of the Emergency Preparedness Department. The EP Volunteer will volunteer hours as needed for training and in the event of an activation of the Emergency Operations Center or Type 3 IMT deployment.

Tasks Associated with Position:

  • Attend EM training classes sponsored by EPD
  • Fulfill response roles during incidents or disasters as assigned by Volunteer Coordinator
  • Tasks assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator, Deputy Director or Division Chief.

Position Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Personal Computer operations;
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret data;
  • Familiarity with EPD Preparedness Programs;
  • Trained on FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Trained in applications NIMS/ICS courses for assigned tasks during activations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
